Ever wonder where the phrase “leap of faith” came from? The 19th-century Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard coined it to describe the process by which a person comes to accept genuine Christianity. This “leap of faith” includes reason and evidence but suggests that an element of trust is required in order for us to understand and embrace spiritual truth. The Bible supports this need for faith. The author of the book of Hebrews writes:
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. (Hebrews 11:1, 6)
Those of you who have already chosen to enter an intercultural marriage (or are about to) know that this decision requires a leap of faith, as well. So many questions accompany the choice:
Will my parents (or other family members) approve of my spouse? If not, what will happen?
Am I ready to face stereotypes and prejudice as a result of choosing to marry a person from a different ethnic, cultural or religious background?
Will marriage be much more difficult for me and my spouse than for others due to our varied cultural backgrounds and worldviews?
How can we identify and work through intercultural conflicts and come to a peaceful resolution?
How can we maintain a godly marriage despite the temptations and stresses that life continues to send our way?
